#MakesTooMuchSense: Why Dallas and Cleveland Should Make a Blockbuster Deal

The headline already may have thrown off a lot of college football fans, but hear me out! While this trade would obviously involve two professional football teams, I'd argue that it could have a bigger impact on the college landscape. With Dallas currently having a Head Coach vacancy and the reported interest in Coach Prime, you may start to be understanding my thinking on this one.
Coach Prime has made it clear to anyone who will actually listen to him that the only way he would go to the NFL is if he could coach BOTH of his sons. I don't think he would have any issue finding a way to get Shiloh on his roster since I don't believe he is an NFL talent. However, there would need to be some chaos for Coach Prime to be in a position to draft Shedeur to play Quarterback for his team. This is where my controlled chaos scenario would come into play.
I know Dak Prescott just signed a big extension. For what he has done on the field versus what he is getting paid, that would not be an easy contract to move in my opinion. Luckily for the Cowboys, there is a team that could be the perfect dance partner. The Cleveland Browns took a massive swing by giving Deshaun Watson a 5 year, fully guaranteed contract. That swing has been nothing but a miss so far. In 3 years, he has only played in a total of 19 games due to suspensions and injuries. After a 3-14 2024 season, this upcoming season could prove to be a pivotal one if that Cleveland staff, led by Kevin Stefanski, want to continue their coaching careers with the Browns.
Now that we have set the scene, lets get into how we could make the magic happen. Cleveland needs stability and Dallas needs hope of getting over the hump. My proposed trade offer would be:
Dallas Receives:
Cleveland Browns 2025 1st Round Pick, #2
Deshaun Watson, QB
Cleveland Receives:
Dallas Cowboys 2025 1st Round Pick, #12
Dallas Cowboys 2026 2nd Round Pick
Dak Prescott, QB
This is perfect scenario for both teams. For the Cowboys, you feel like you have already reached your peak success with Prescott. You paid him because you originally overplayed your hand and were not in any position to acquire his successor through the draft nor did you have enough cap space to bid for a replacement in free agency. By trading for pick 2, you get the opportunity to give your fanbase hope. You get to open back up your championship window by getting (hopefully) a franchise QB on a rookie deal. To top that off, you put yourself in the driver seat to lure Coach Prime away from Colorado.
For Cleveland, this is pretty simple. Everyone around the organization and around the league as a whole, believe Cleveland is a QB away from being a serious contender. Stefanksi, a two-time Coach of the Year, has found a way to make it work with whoever is under center, but he has lacked consistency and stability at that position his entire tenure thus far. Instead of rolling the dice on a unproven (at the NFL ranks) commodity, take another swing on a veteran QB that can help you win now. The best part of this trade is that you put yourself in a position to have your QB of the future and at 12, you could still draft a cornerstone Left Tackle to protect Prescott's blind side.
Watson would never play a snap for the Cowboys, why would they trade for and pay him guaranteed money when he has no future in Dallas? Coach Prime does not have what it takes to be successful at the NFL level. Trading for Dak Prescott would be compounding the mistake of giving up on Baker Mayfield and trading for Deshaun Watson. These are just some of the things I imagine you would start to hear if this deal ever got done. My response to all the concerns would be simple. What Cleveland and Dallas have done the last 30 years has not worked. Why not go outside the box?
Dallas and Cleveland have both shown that they can win games, here and there, with mediocre QB play. Neither of these teams just want to win games. They want to win the BIG game. Dallas needs a star, and Cleveland needs stability. I think both needs would be met with this trade, but this probably won't get past being a thought in my head because it #MakesTooMuchSense.
